Description of the job

Within the AIT (Assembly, Integration and Test) Mechanical Precision Engineering team of Optical Instruments, the Engineer trainee will be assigned to Metrology and the realization of precision shims at the interface between optics and Instrument structures.

To carry out his work, the trainee may be required to train and then use (in collaboration with the operational teams) tools:
* Measuring tools: Laser Tracker, 3D measuring machines, Theodoliths
* 3D design and measurement software package: PC-DMIS, Spatial Analyser, Catia
* Other: Excel and Matlab

This 6 Month internship will start from February 2018 (Date subject to some flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities

* During the first part of the internship, the intern will focus on shim Metrology:
* Identify the different types of interfaces to be shimed : study of the existing ones on current and past programs (fixing types)
* Identify the different methods of gap measurement currently used: participation in the clean room shim measurement operations + interviews with mechanical and optical engineers

*
* The second part of the course will be devoted to finding solutions:
* Research innovative methodologies (technological watch) to improve the metrology of shims
* Study the concept of adjustable wedges based on the experience of another program
* Define one or more innovative shim concepts according to interfaces (mirrors, telescopes,...) and then present them to our design department (responsible for the design of these parts)
* Define design rules to facilitate the machinability and control of shims (accessibility at measurement points): specification to our design department
