Description of the job

Machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) communications cover communications between entities that do not directly require human intervention. These communications generally use few messages of very small size. Although long-standing, the services provided by this type of communication are growing rapidly and form one of the most dynamic markets in the information technology sector. M2M and IoT technologies are now entering their mature phase at all levels: electronics, access and network protocols, access and data processing platforms. Thus, the number of applications and services made possible by their assembly is immense.
The satellite domain is also contributing to the growth of this promising market: several M2M communications systems are operational and others are in preparation:
Orbcomm: constellation of low-Earth orbiting satellites and a complete system dedicated to M2M, with almost 1 million terminals. Orbcomm is poised to launch its second generation of constellation.
Iridium: constellation of low-Earth orbiting satellites offering a wide range of mobile services (voice, medium data, etc.), including an M2M service (SBD for Short Burst Data) with a dedicated terminal.
Globalstar: constellation of satellites in low orbit for sending messages on the uplink.
Inmarsat: constellation of geostationary satellites offering a wide range of mobile services (voice, medium/high speed data) including a M2M service rather oriented "high-end" (IsatData Pro) with a dedicated terminal.
Argos: constellation of satellites in low orbit for data collection services (position tracking, sensors) for non-commercial purposes.
In this context, Airbus Defence and Space is studying IoT communications solutions in low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems. A specific physical layer specific to this type of system has been developed within Airbus and must now be optimized and implemented for various scenarios and contexts, such as embedded systems.
The internship will take place in the Telecom System Department of the Satellite Telecommunications Division of Airbus Defence & Space.

Internship Content

The objective of this course is to study, improve and implement the existing algorithms of the physical layer. These activities will have to be adapted according to the specific constraints of the system, from a software point of view (software) as hardware, especially in the context of embedded systems. The improvements to the physical layer that will be proposed and implemented by the candidate will then be passed on to the real equipment (terminal or satellite) and tested in a representative environment, by simulation, or even in a laboratory on a test bench: prototypes of IoT terminals, software radio equipment and satellite emulators allow a realistic emulation of an IoT system, in a hardware/software environment close to the environment and real equipment

This 6 Month internship will start from January (Date subject to some flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities

The six-month period will be as follows:
Understand the subject and state of the art (about 1 month)
1. Low-orbit communication systems have special characteristics. The first task will be to understand our system and its characteristics.
2. To take stock of the state of the art of modulations and associated signal processing algorithms that could improve the existing system.
Definition and theoretical analysis of improvements of the algorithms of the existing physical layer (1 month).
Implantation of these improvements in the existing physical layer simulator (Matlab/C) (2/3 months) and on test bench.
Study and analysis of the performance of improvements on the basis of simulation and code loopback; identification of areas for improvement and/or proposal of new solutions for the physical layer (2/3 months).
Writing a synthesis of the work done (1 month).

Required skills

Knowledge in telecommunications and signal transmission: link balance, signal processing, physical layer.
Computer knowledge: very good practice in C and Matlab. Ability to code on a Windows and Linux environment.
Skills: autonomy, method, speed of execution, critical thinking, curiosity, open-mindedness.

Advanced English.
